Britain's globe empire was supported by the British Indian Army, founded in 1895 from East India Company's presidency troops. Much has been written about Army's colonial and worldwide campaigns as a vehicle of imperial power, but less its transfer to authority after Second World War. While independence meant transition force rule civilian oversight India's new national leadership, Dominion inherited thousands former soldiers, including two generations officers indoctrinated military cultural practises developed UK, India, Empire. This paper examines Empire's impact on narrative, ethos, culture, tactics, strategies 1945, when army began rule, 1973, government reinstated rank Field Marshal.
